Whether it's Spring,
Summer or Fall, every week at the Cross M Ranch is spent doing the
things that need to be done on a working cattle ranch. That means
moving cattle, doctoring, mending fences, checking on the livestock and
helping our neighbors with the various aspects of ranching. No matter
what week you book with us, you're likely to be going on a cattle
drive. We have to move cattle from one pasture to another for good land
stewardship, so our drives can be anywhere from 1 mile to 8 miles in
length.
We are privileged to
work with several large ranches in
this area by helping their cowboys take care of the large numbers of
cows, calves, heifers and steers that are on the neighboring spreads.
During the different seasons
you can expect to participate in the
various aspects of running a Montana ranch.
We want to
emphasize that no matter what week you come stay
with us, you're likely to be going on a cattle drive, rounding up cows
and doing the different kinds of things that make up a cowboy's life.
There is always
"cowboying" that needs to be done on the Cross M.
Late Spring
Late
Spring is not only the start of our guest season but it features our
speciality weeks, including branding and Miles City Bucking Horse Sale
specials.
Summer
The cattle
are now at the summer pastures at
the far end of the ranch where the sorting, doctoring and moving from
pasture to pasture is done constantly. Along with this we are
taking care of replacement heifers, bulls and fattening
the steers. Guests take part in all the activities if they wish.
What WE do here is the "REAL McCoy", and you will get all the
hands-on experience you want just like the actual cowboys and cowgirls
doing their jobs.
Here's your chance to experience the true
cowboy way
with us by moving cattle and riding great horses in the wonderful
surroundings of the Big Open.
During the months of June through September a lot of our time is spent
riding on the range. We will be riding in draws, coulees and canyons.
During this time you will also be watching for wildlife, spotting
numerous types of wildflowers and have the opportunity to photograph
this pristine country. These weeks are very special to us, working in
the spectacular beauty and serenity of the open country. Moving cattle
over this terrain of tall buttes, cactus and sage-covered range is
rewarding and leaves you with a huge sense of achievement. This is what
being a real cowboy or cowgirl is all about.
Fall
See
and help
us gather the herd from the summer range....all the mothers and
babies.... sorting and getting them ready for their journey home. There
are lots of things to do in the fall to get the ranch and cattle ready
for the winter season. This is the time of the year when the sunrises
and
sunsets are particularly spectacular as the colors start to change with
the cooler weather. If you are a photography buff, then there is no
better time to come visit us!
What about weather?
Weather plays a huge
role in what jobs need getting done...so this information is a
guideline, NOT etched in stone by any stretch of the imagination.
Please
call us at 406-557-2667 and we will be happy to give you as much
information as we can about what to expect on your visit.
